Mail Shark employees love animals, and many of us even got our furry friends from shelters. That’s why we teamed up with the Animal Rescue League of Berks County on Saturday, October 20 to host a free pet adoption day. The initial goal for pet adoptions was set at 40. But by the end of the day, 62 animals – 42 dogs and cats and 20 chickens – found their forever homes.
“The Animal Rescue League of Berks County had a spectacular day of adoptions thanks to our friends at Mail Shark. We are so appreciative of the support of our community,” said ARL Executive Director Tom Hubric.
In addition to adoptions, attendees enjoyed complimentary refreshments and free pumpkin painting. Plus, there were three waves of raffles throughout the day where participants could win one of six gift baskets provided by the event’s co-sponsors.
Speaking of sponsors, we’d like to thank the following businesses for helping us make the event a true success. We couldn’t have done it without their generous donations of supplies, raffle prizes, and refreshments.

“On behalf of the Animal Rescue League staff, volunteers, and animals, I would like to thank you so much for sponsoring such a successful event this past Saturday!,” said ARL Community Outreach & Customer Service Director Hope Poliansky. “We received a lot of positive feedback regarding the pumpkin painting and raffles. Overall, it was a beautiful day with fun activities and – most importantly – many adoptions.”
The ARL has a long history of helping homeless pets. It was founded in 1952 with the goal of ensuring the humane treatment of animals in need. In 1959, the ARL were one of the first shelters in the country to adopt a compulsory spaying and neutering adoption policy. They also helped lead the way in creating stronger protections for laboratory animals. Today, their facility has kennels that can accommodate up to 60 dogs and 60 cats.
If you’d like to adopt a pet, foster shelter animals, volunteer your time, or host an adoption day yourself, there are plenty of ways you can help the ARL. Or, if you’d like to donate some items off their Amazon Wishlist, it’s always greatly appreciated. Here are just a few supplies Mail Shark employees donated to the ARL prior to the event if you need inspiration:
- Bedding
- Cleaning supplies
- Dog and cat food
- Ear cleaner
- Food and water dishes
- Grass and hay for horses
- Medication
- Nursing bottles
- Pill pockets
